Hi, I’m Andrew Silverstein

I am a New York-based writer.  I broke the story that Congressman George Santos lied about his grandparents escaping the Holocaust.

In 2024, I won two New York Press Association Awards writing about migrant hotels and Israeli/Palestinian food. The previous year, I was named “Best Freelancer of the Year” by the American Jew Press Association and won a Wilbur Award.

My work has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, the Forward, Jewish Currents, New York Magazine, The City, New York Daily News, El País, and National Geographic and is widely cited.

I am bilingual in Spanish and English.

Geneological Research

My articles often rely on deep genealogical research. This includes breaking the story that George Santos’ grandparents were not Jewish Holocaust refugees; revealing the true story the founder of Murray’s Cheese; and identifying the Native model in the iconic Levy’s Rye Bread ads.

In addition, I do freelance genealogical work:

Casa Museo Zenobia Juan Ramón Jiménez: Found historical documents of the Nobel Prize Winning writer Juan Ramón Jiménez and his wife Zenobia during their years in the United States.
