Hi, I’m Andrew Silverstein

I am a New York-based writer.  I broke the story that Congressman George Santos lied about his grandparents escaping the Holocaust.

In 2023, I was named “Best Freelancer of the Year” by the American Jew Press Association and won a Wilbur Award.  I have also been recognized by the Society for Features Journalism and the New York Public Library.

My work has appeared in The New York Times, The Forward, Jewish Currents, Grubstreet, New York Daily News, El País, and National Geographic, and has been cited in places like The New York Times, the Washington Post, and CNN.

I am bilingual in Spanish and English.

Geneological Research

My articles often rely on deep genealogical research. This includes breaking the story that George Santos’ grandparents were not Jewish Holocaust refugees; revealing the true story the founder of Murray’s Cheese; and identifying the Native model in the iconic Levy’s Rye Bread ads.

In addition, I do freelance genealogical work:

Casa Museo Zenobia Juan Ramón Jiménez: Found historical documents of the Nobel Prize Winning writer Juan Ramón Jiménez and his wife Zenobia during their years in the United States.
